Hi Clash: Sorry haven't posted for long time....death of brother over holidays. I was totally happy to see more pigboats being posted though. Thanks for cheering me up. I have to admit that the cover isn't one of my favorites. Yes...me...a long time fan...doesn't like something you did. STOP THE PRESSES! Is that what sunk the pigboat? In my opinion there isn't enough contrast and things just look fuzzy and blurred. It's really hard to tell what it is suppose to be. (hangs head)...sorry. :)
I like the cover a lot - but I have to admit I always thought the name 'pigboats' was a working title. As a name, it's got a few issues. 'Pigboats' as a name tends to cheapen the excitement of the subject matter, for one thing. 'Gridiron', for instance (for a hypothetical football game), would have a way of exciting people about the subject where 'Pigskin' would not. 'Flying Aces' = exciting. 'Flying Pigs' = not exciting (except maybe to Pink Floyd fans).
Secondly, 'Pigboats' is a particularly American slang for submarines, and so is meaningless to pretty much everyone else. I had to look it up to figure what the hell you were talking about. I know that you've removed the German and British content from the book and and it is now essentially a game about American subs, but it might have broader appeal with a different name - a more universal name.
Man I am so sorry to hear about your brother! My wife lost her sister some years ago and I know it devastated her. *HUGS!*
Sorry you're not liking it, hon. It's the stern of a sinking freighter, based on a photo taken through a periscope, so the painting is supposed to look like it's taken through a periscope as well.
you've got some good points, but the name was always going to be IHW: Pigboats. Pigboats was a term of derision that the submariners wore as a badge of pride, and IHW: Pigboats is a badge of pride for me as well. rest assured, though, that if and when I do German or English subs, the name will be appropriate. :D
It says it all and it looks good! I only wished the boat and sea would contrast somehow. Would flames be too much?
ReplyDeleteNow, that is a very awesome cover.
ReplyDelete@boulet - Thanks, Franck! I tried flames, and they just didn't look right, especially with the blue-black color palette I was using.
ReplyDelete@Silverlion - Thanks, Tim! :D

Ahhh - I thought it was the conning tower of a listing sub after being torpedoed. This, obviously, seen from a periscope or some other viewing device.
ReplyDeleteY'know, my son thought the same thing... Hmmm. maybe I have to make it clearer.

Heck no! It's a wonderful thing that your cover can be read in two different but appropriate ways.
ReplyDeleteOh I will adjust to it. I just thought it was a bit TOO blurry. I love the setting though so that is the most important to me. :)
